Regular Vet Checks

The Complete Guide to Siberian Huskys

A Healthy Husky

=

worry free, happy Husky owner!

A yearly visit to the vet should be part of a good Siberian Husky health care routine.

Older Siberian Huskys, or those with known health conditions, may need to be seen more frequently to ensure that the vet stays on top of any changes in overall health.

A regular veterinary visit will help identify any possible issues and concerns, plus it will keep your Siberian Husky up to date on vaccinations and boosters. The regular vet check will usually include a weight check, temperature check, heart rate and lung check with a stethoscope, palpitation of the stomach and abdomen, as well as examination of the mouth, nose, eyes and ears…

  • Diarrhea… is a watery, frequent bowel movement caused by a multitude of things. If your Siberian Husky has occasional diarrhea but seems bright and healthy, you probably do not need to worry. The next time your Siberian Husky is having problems, you will be armed with all the latest information in how to determine how sever the problem may be, or, if it’s just a regular, natural occurrence. This can save you hundreds in vet bills! or simply give you peace of mind with less stress.
  • Vomiting… is a common occurrence and your Husky can throw up water, food or even bile. You may not see your pet vomit but find their vomit on the floor. Get to the root of the problem quickly again peace of mind is key here.
  • Bad Breath… One of the most common causes of bad breath in a Siberian Husky is dental problems. If left untreated the problem may become expensive and troublesome for your Husky.
  • Hip dysplasia... is a degenerative joint disease that is common in Siberian Husky. Caused by hip joint looseness, it creates abnormal erosion and wear on the hip joint and arthritis sets in. Be prepared. Learn what to look for and what to avoid. Again an expensive condition with lots of heartache if left too late
  • Canine Arthritis... Many canines suffer from arthritis; however, it is especially common in older Siberian Huskys. There are several types of canine arthritis, but the most common form is osteoarthritis. Arthritis breaks down and wears away the joint cartilage that covers and protects the bone. With this buffer gone, some bones come in direct contact, causing pain. Learn what to do to reduce the chances of your Husky suffering this degenerative disease… again avoiding much heartache.
  • Ear infections… are a common health problem in Huskys but fortunately, owners can often treat or prevent reoccurring infections saving money with unnecessary trips to the vet reducing stress for your Husky.
  • Eye infections… Like our eyes, a Siberian Huskies eyes are very sensitive, but unlike us, they cannot keep their eyes healthy and clean effectively. Eye infections in Siberian Husky’s can occur any time, so it is your responsibility to check their eyes for signs of infection or injury. Know the signs, look for them and have them treated immediately, your Husky will appreciate it.
  • Constipation… Although most Siberian Huskies have one or two bouts of constipation during their life, it is not normal to have recurring constipation problems. If this happens to your Siberian Husky, you need to find the underlying cause. When a Siberian Husky has prolonged constipation, it often causes serious gastrointestinal problems such as mega-colon, which is an abnormal enlargement of the colon. Often a simple dietary change will save your Husky from this discomfort or will avoid the pain altogether with the right diet.
  • Heatstroke… Unlike humans, Siberian Huskies do not have sweat glands, so their cooling system is their paw pads, tongue and nose. When a Siberian Husky cannot maintain its normal body temperature due to excessive heat or high humidity, they can collapse from heatstroke, which is often fatal. Recently Ella, our 12 year old hid in our car and got shut in by accident on one of the hottest days of the year. What to do in this e-book definitely saved her life and thankfully she is still with us now. Dogs DIE from Heatstroke! Don’t suffer the pain of this needless loss. Know the signs.
  • Know what to do.

To ensure good health, the Husky should never be chained up or isolated; nor should it be punished for its natural desire to wander, roam and run. Those expecting this independent breed to blindly obey are likely to run themselves ragged, and are also likely to never see the results they desire.

At the same time, one can look forward to owning a dog that has an uncanny intelligence, is very people oriented and who will never turn down the chance to get out and about. The minute a person sees a Husky, the breed finds itself the center of attention. This is because the Husky not only has a fascinating look, but a reputation as one of the most intelligent breeds of dog around.

For the most part, the Siberian Husky leads a rather healthy existence. That is not to say that problems do not occur from time to time, but where there are matters for concern, such as purchasing a Husky for show purposes, there are a number of tests that can be done to exclude genetic diseases and other ailments. Huskies that are used for work can experience their own versions of occupational work injuries such as arthritis and hip dysplasia. Owners are cautioned to keep an eye on their Siberian Huky as they have been known to continue working through painful injuries, causing further damage to themselves.
